INSPIRATION OF THE BIBLE

LESSON NINE
CONCERNING THE SCRIPTURES
I. We believe that the Holy Bible was written by men,
divinely inspired.
A. They were not men whose profession was writing. They were
princes, kings, herdsmen, fig-gatherers, fishermen, lawyers,
doctors, priests, and others, yet all wrote in complete agreement.
2 Pet 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of
man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
B. They were divinely inspired:
2 Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness:
2 Tim 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly
furnished unto all good works. (see 2 Pet 1:21 above)
Acts 1:16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been
fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before
concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
Exo 6:10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
1 Pet 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and
searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come
unto you:
1 Pet 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of
Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand
the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
II A perfect treasure of heavenly instructions
A. Pure - Psa 12:6 The words of the LORD are
pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven
times.
Psa 119:140 Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth
it.
Prov 30:5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them
that put their trust in him.
B. True - Psa 119:160 Thy word is true from the
beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for
ever.
John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Rom 3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief
make the faith of God without effect?
Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar;
as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings,
and mightest overcome when thou art judged. judgments endureth for
ever.
C. Perfect - Psa 19:7 The law of the LORD is
perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure,
making wise the simple.
D. Precious - Psa 19:10 More to be desired are
they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey
and the honeycomb.
III Salvation is its end
A. 2 Tim 3:15 And that from a child thou hast
known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto
salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
James 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth,
that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is
the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the
Jew first, and also to the Greek.
1 John 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe
on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he
gave us commandment.
1 Pet 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of
incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for
ever.
IV Truth without any mixture of error
A. Prov 30:5 Every word of God is pure: he is a
shield unto them that put their trust in him.
Prov 30:6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and
thou be found a liar.
V It reveals the principles of judgment
A. John 12:47 And if any man hear my words, and
believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but
to save the world.
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words,
hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same
shall judge him in the last day.
VI It is the only basis for Christian fellowship
A, Phil 3:16 Nevertheless, whereto we have
already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same
thing.
Rom 12:16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high
things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own
conceits.
Rom 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were
written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of
the scriptures might have hope.
Rom 15:5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be
likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
Rom 15:6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God,
even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light,
we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ
his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
VII Standard for all human conduct, creeds and opinions
A. 1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every
spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many
false prophets are gone out into the world.
Rev 2:2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and
how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried
them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them
liars:
1 Th 5:20 Despise not prophesyings.
1 Th 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
Isa 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not
according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
