THE HARMONY OF PROPHECY
Lesson Number Nine
Lesson Number Nine
1 Cor 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all
be made alive.
1 Cor 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits;
afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.
Introduction: Man has developed ideas as to the after-life,
which range from endless re-incarnations to nothing at all. Whatever
men may believe, they all have an instinctive belief in life beyond
the grave.
I. Ancient believers looked forward to a new life.
A. Job asked and then answered by faith, the basic question
of all mankind.
Job 14:14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my
appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
Job 14:15 Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a
desire to the work of thine hands.
B. David expressed this hope in the very human terms of
rejoining loved ones.
2 Sam 12:23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I
bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to
me.
C. He spoke of awaking with the Lord’s likeness.
Psa 17:15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I
shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
Compare this with:
1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it
doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he
shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Col 3:4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall
ye also appear with him in glory.
Phil 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be
fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working
whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
II. The Rapture (resurrection of the saved) will be the
completion of the work of Redemption.
Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before
the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without
blame before him in love:
Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are
sealed unto the day of redemption.
A. We will then lay aside the mortality we received by
nature through Adam’s sin, and will take up immortality received by
grace through the righteousness of Christ.
1 Cor 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a
living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
1 Cor 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and
this mortal must put on immortality.
1 Cor 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on
incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then
shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is
swallowed up in victory.
2 Cor 5:4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being
burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that
mortality might be swallowed up of life.
Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the
dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also
quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
B. The seeming finality of the grave is robbed of its terror
for believers by the simple analogy of the grain of corn.
1 Cor 15:36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened,
except it die:
1 Cor 15:37 And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body
that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some
other grain:
1 Cor 15:38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to
every seed his own body.
C. We WILL receive a spiritual body.
1 Cor 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on
incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then
shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is
swallowed up in victory.
D. It will be a sudden occurrence.
Rev 22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come
quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
1 Cor 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last
trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised
incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
E. It will be at the BEGINNING of the Tribulation Period.
Isa 26:20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and
shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little
moment, until the indignation be overpast.
Isa 26:21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to
punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth
also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.
III. The anti-christ can’t reign until the Holy Spirit
leaves.
2 Th 2:6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be
revealed in his time.
2 Th 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he
who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
2 Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall
consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the
brightness of his coming:
A. Jesus promised the church the presence of the Holy Spirit
until He returned.
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you
another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive,
because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for
he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
IV. ALL the saved will be caught up.
1 Cor 15:51 Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all
sleep, but we shall all be changed,
This is the same ‘all’ that will appear before the judgment
seat of Christ.
2 Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body,
according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
B. It includes the living as well as the dead.
1 Th 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren,
concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others
which have no hope.
1 Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so
them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
1 Th 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we
which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not
prevent them which are asleep.
1 Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a
shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God:
and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1 Th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up
together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and
so shall we ever be with the Lord.
1 Th 4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
Next Week: Meanwhile in the presence of the Lord
