THE HARMONY OF PROPHECY
Lesson # 3

THE CHRIST OF PROPHECY
Acts 10:43 To him give all the
prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in
him shall receive remission of sins.
Luke 24:44 And he said unto
them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was
yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were
written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the
psalms, concerning me.
Acts 3:24 Yea, and all the
prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as
have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
In order that we might not
fail to recognize His Son, God gave us a detailed description.
Some of these might seem contradictory until we note the care
with which God saw to their fulfilment.
Following is a partial list of the Old Testament
prophecies with their New Testament fulfillments.
(1) He was to be the seed
of the woman. (this could only be done by a virgin birth)
Gen.3:15 And I will put enmity
between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed;
it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Gal.4:4 But when the fulness
of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman,
made under the law,
(2) He was to be of the
seed (lineage) of Abraham.
Gen.17:7 And I will establish
my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their
generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee,
and to thy seed after thee.
Gal.3:16 Now to Abraham and
his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as
of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
(3) He was to be of
David's lineage.
Psa.132:11 The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will
not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy
throne.
Acts 13:22 And when he had
removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to
whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the
son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all
my will.
23 Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise
raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:
Rom.1:2 (Which he had promised
afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of
the seed of David according to the flesh;
(4) He was to come on the
scene at a set time
Dan. 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and
upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an
end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to
bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision
and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of
the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the
Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two
weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in
troublous times.
26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off,
but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall
come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end
thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war
desolations are determined.
Nehemiah tells us the year
and the month when this prophecy began to be fulfilled.
Neh.2:1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the
twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him:
and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not
been beforetime sad in his presence.
Luke tells us what year of
the reign of Tiberius was in progress, as Christ began his
ministry. Six other officials of that year are also named, so
that the year might be pinpointed. Three and one half years
later the 483 years of Daniel's prophecy was completed and
Messiah was cut off.
Luke 3:1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of
Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and
Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch
of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the
tetrarch of Abilene,
2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God
came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
Mat.26:18 And he said, Go into
the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My
time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my
disciples.
Luke 19:42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least
in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now
they are hid from thine eyes.
43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies
shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep
thee in on every side,
44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children
within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon
another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
(5) Born of a Virgin.
Isa.7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign;
Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call
his name Immanuel.
Matt.1:18 Now the birth of
Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was
espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found
with child of the Holy Ghost.
Luke1:27 To a virgin espoused
to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the
virgin's name was Mary.
(6) Called Emmanuel.
Isa.7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign;
Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call
his name Immanuel.
Matt.1:23 Behold, a virgin
shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall
call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
(7) Born in Bethlehem of
Judea.
Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be
little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he
come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings
forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
Matt.2:1 Now when Jesus was
born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king,
behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have
seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled,
and all Jerusalem with him.
4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes
of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should
be born.
5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is
written by the prophet,
6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least
among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a
Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
(8) Great persons came to
adore him.
Psa.72:10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring
presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.
Matt.2:9 When they had heard
the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in
the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where
the young child was.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great
joy.
11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young
child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him:
and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto
him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
(9) The slaying of the
children of Bethlehem.
Jer.31:15 Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in
Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her
children refused to be comforted for her children, because they
were not.
Matt.2:16 Then Herod, when he
saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and
sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem,
and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under,
according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the
wise men.
17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the
prophet, saying,
18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping,
and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would
not be comforted, because they are not.
(10) He is called out of
Egypt.
Hosea 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and
called my son out of Egypt.
Matt.2:15 And was there until
the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken
of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called
my son.
(11) He was to be
preceeded by John the Baptist.
Isa.40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness,
Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a
highway for our God.
Mal.3:1 Behold, I will send my
messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord,
whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the
messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall
come, saith the LORD of hosts.
Mat.3:1 In those days came
John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is
at hand.
3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias,
saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye
the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Luke 1:17 And he shall go
before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts
of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the
wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the
Lord.
(12) He came out of
Nazareth of Galillee
Luke 9:1 Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was
in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land
of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more
grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in
Galilee of the nations.
2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light:
they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them
hath the light shined.
Matt. 2:23 And he came and
dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
Matt.4:12 Now when Jesus had
heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which
is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the
prophet, saying,
15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way
of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to
them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung
up.
(13) Entering His public
ministry.
Isa.61:1 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the
LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he
hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty
to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are
bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of
vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
Luke 4:16 And he came to
Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was,
he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for
to read.
17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet
Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place
where it was written,
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed
me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the
brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and
recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that
are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister,
and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the
synagogue were fastened on him.
21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture
fulfilled in your ears.
22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious
words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not
this Joseph's son?
Lu 4:43 And he said unto them,
I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for
therefore am I sent.
(14) His entry into
Jerusalem.
Zech. 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O
daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is
just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and
upon a colt the foal of an ass.
Matt.21:4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto
thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an
ass.
(15) He is brought into
the Temple.
Hag.2:7 And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all
nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith
the LORD of hosts.
8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of
hosts.
9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the
former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give
peace, saith the LORD of hosts.
Luke 2:29 Lord, now lettest
thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people
Israel.
(16) His Poverty
Isa.53:2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant,
and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor
comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that
we should desire him.
Luke 9:58 And Jesus said unto
him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the
Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
(17) His Meekness
Isa.42:2 He shall not cry, nor
lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.3 A
bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he
not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.
Matt.12:18 Behold my servant,
whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased:
I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the
Gentiles.
19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his
voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he
not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
(18) Tender and
Compassionate.
Isa.40:11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall
gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and
shall gently lead those that are with young.
Isa..42:3 A bruised reed shall
he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall
bring forth judgment unto truth.
Matt.12:15 But when Jesus knew
it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes
followed him, and he healed them all;
16 And charged them that they should not make him known:
17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the
prophet, saying,
18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my
soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he
shall show judgment to the Gentiles.
19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his
voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he
not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
Heb.4:15 For we have not an
high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our
infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet
without sin.
(19) Without Guile.
Isa.53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and
with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence,
neither was any deceit in his mouth.
I Peter 2:22 Who did no sin,
neither was guile found in his mouth:
(20) His Zeal.
Psalm 69:9 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten
me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are
fallen upon me.
John 2:17 And his disciples
remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath
eaten me up.
(21) He Taught in
Parables.
Psa.78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter
dark sayings of old:
Matt.13:34 All these things
spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a
parable spake he not unto them:
35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet,
saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things
which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
(22) The failure of the
Jews to understand.
Isa.6:9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye
indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
Matt.13:14 And in them is
fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye
shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see,
and shall not perceive:
15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are
dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any
time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,
and should understand with their heart, and should be converted,
and I should heal them.
(23) His Miracles.
Isa.35:5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be
opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
6 Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the
dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and
streams in the desert.
Matt.11:4 Jesus answered and
said unto them, Go and show John again those things which ye do
hear and see:
5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the
lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up,
and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
(A) The stilling of the
sea.
Psa.89:8 O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto
thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?
9 Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof
arise, thou stillest them.
Psa.93:4 The LORD on high is
mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty
waves of the sea.
Luke 8:24 And they came to
him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he
arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and
they ceased, and there was a calm.
(B) Men of the sea
(fishermen) witness it
Psa.107:23 They that go down
to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
24 These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.
25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth
up the waves thereof.
26 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the
depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and
are at their wit's end.
28 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth
them out of their distresses.
29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are
still.
30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them
unto their desired haven.
Luke 8:25 And he said unto
them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered,
saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he
commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
(C) He walked on the
water.
Psa.77:19 Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great
waters, and thy footsteps are not known.
Job 9:8 Which alone spreadeth
out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
Matt.14:25 And in the fourth
watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were
troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good
cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
Job 9:8 Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon
the waves of the sea.
HE WALKS UPON THE WINGS OF
THE WIND
Psa 104:3 Who layeth the beams
of his chambers in the waters:
who maketh the clouds his chariot:who walketh upon the wings of
the wind:
Who is he, who in majesty,
Can cause the earth to rend?
The Eternal Son, the Holy One!
And He walks upon the wings of the wind!
It was He who died - was
crucified,
To save the souls of men -
From the Father above, a gift of love;
And He walks upon the wings of the wind!
He gives me my breath, yet
down into death,
My Saviour did descend,
That for Him I might live and all glory give;
And He walks upon the wings of the wind!
He's with me today - each
step of the way,
As His vineyard I labor to tend -
I'm protected each night by His power and might;
And He walks upon the wings of the wind!
I know that He's real, for
His presence I feel,
And He chastens each time I offend;
And when I kneel down in prayer, my Lord meets me there -
And He walks upon the wings of the wind!

(24) Bearing Reproach
Psa.22:6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and
despised of the people.
Psa..69:7 Because for thy sake
I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.
Psa 69:9 For the zeal of thine
house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that
reproached thee are fallen upon me.
Psa 69:20 Reproach hath broken
my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to
take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found
none.
Rom.15:3 For even Christ
pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of
them that reproached thee fell on me.
(25) Rejected by the Jews.
Psa. 69:8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren,
and an alien unto my mother's children.
Isa.63:3 I have trodden the
winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I
will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and
their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will
stain all my raiment.
John 1:11 He came unto his
own, and his own received him not.
(26) A stumbling stone to
the Jews.
Isa.8:14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of
stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of
Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of
Jerusalem.
15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken,
and be snared, and be taken.
Rom.9:32 Wherefore? Because
they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the
law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and
rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be
ashamed.
I Peter 2:7 Unto you therefore
which believe he is precious: but unto them which be
disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same
is made the head of the corner,
8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them
which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also
they were appointed.
(27) Hated by the Jews.
Isa.49:7 Thus saith the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, and
his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation
abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise,
princes also shall worship, because of the LORD that is
faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.
Psa.69:4 They that hate me
without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that
would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty:
then I restored that which I took not away.
John 15:24 If I had not done
among them the works which none other man did, they had not had
sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my
Father.
25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled
that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
(28) Rejected by Jewish
Rulers.
Psa.118:22 The stone which the builders refused is become
the head stone of the corner.
Matt.21:42 Jesus saith unto
them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the
builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner:
this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
(29) A Coalition of Jewish
and Gentile Rulers against Him.
Psa.2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a
vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take
counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed,
saying,
Luke 23:12 And the same day
Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they
were at enmity between themselves.
Acts 4:25 Who by the mouth of
thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the
people imagine vain things?
26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered
together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast
anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and
the people of Israel, were gathered together,
(30) Betrayed by a friend.
Psa.41:9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted,
which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
Psa.55:12 For it was not an
enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither
was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me;
then I would have hid myself from him:
13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine
acquaintance.
John 13:18 I speak not of you
all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be
fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel
against me.
(31) Forsaken by His
Disciples.
Zech.13:7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and
against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts:
smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will
turn mine hand upon the little ones.
Matt.26:31 Then saith Jesus
unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night:
for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of
the flock shall be scattered abroad.
(32) The Price of His
Betrayal.
Zech.11:12 And I said unto them, If ye think good,
give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my
price thirty pieces of silver.
Matt.26:15 And said unto them,
What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they
covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
(33) The money used to
purchase the Potters Field.
Zech.11:13 And the LORD said
unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was
prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and
cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.
Matt.27:7 And they took
counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury
strangers in.
8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this
day.
9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the
prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the
price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of
Israel did value;
10 And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed
me.
(34) The Intensity of His
Suffering.
Psalm 22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are
out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of
my bowels.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue
cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of
death.
Luke 22:42 Saying, Father, if
thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my
will, but thine, be done.
43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven,
strengthening him.
44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat
was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
(35) Patient and silent in
his suffering.
Isa.53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he
opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not
his mouth.
Matt.26:63 But Jesus held his
peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure
thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the
Christ, the Son of God.
Matt.27:12 And when he was
accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things
they witness against thee?
14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the
governor marvelled greatly.
(36) Cheeks were smitten.
Micah 5:1 Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of
troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the
judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.
(37) Spat upon and scourged
Matt 27:30 And they spit upon him,
and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
Isa.50:6 I gave my back to the
smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid
not my face from shame and spitting.
Mark 14:65 And some began to
spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to
say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the
palms of their hands.
John 19:1 Then Pilate
therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his
head, and they put on him a purple robe,
3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with
their hands.
4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them,
Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find
no fault in him.
5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the
purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him,
they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith
unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in
him.
7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought
to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
(38) Hands and feet nailed
to the cross.
Psa.22:16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the
wicked have enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
John 19:18 Where they
crucified him, and two others with him, on either side one, and
Jesus in the midst.
John 20:25 The other disciples
therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto
them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails,
and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my
hand into his side, I will not believe.
John 20:26 And after eight
days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then
came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and
said, Peace be unto you.
27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold
my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side:
and be not faithless, but believing.
(39) Forsaken by the
Father.
Psa..22:1 To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A
Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why
art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my
roaring?
Matt.27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud
voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My
God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
(40) He is Mocked.
Psa.22:7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn:
they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him
deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
Matt.27:39 And they that
passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it
in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come
down from the cross.
41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes
and elders, said,
42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of
Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will
believe him.
43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have
him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the
same in his teeth.
(41) He is given Vinegar
and Gall.
Psa.69:21 They gave me also
gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to
drink.
Matt.27:34 They gave him
vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted
thereof, he would not drink.
(42) His garments are
parted and lots are cast.
Psa.22:18 They part my garments among them, and
cast lots upon my vesture.
Matt 27:35 And they crucified
him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be
fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my
garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
(43) Numbered with the
Transgressors
Isa.53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion
with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong;
because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was
numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.
Mark 15:28 And the scripture
was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the
transgressors.
(44) He Intercedes for his
Murderers.
Isa.53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the
great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he
hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with
the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made
intercession for the transgressors.
Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know
not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
(45) Not a bone broken.
Psa.34:20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them
is broken.
Exodus 12:46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not
carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither
shall ye break a bone thereof.
John 19:33 But when they came
to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his
legs:
34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and
forthwith came there out blood and water.
35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and
he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be
fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
(46) His body pierced.
Zech.12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David,
and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and
of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have
pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his
only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in
bitterness for his firstborn.
John 19:34 But one of the
soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there
out blood and water.
John 19:37 And again another scripture saith, They shall
look on him whom they pierced.
(47) Buried with the rich.
Isa.53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the
rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was
any deceit in his mouth.
Matt.27:57 When the even was
come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who
also himself was Jesus' disciple:
58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate
commanded the body to be delivered.
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean
linen cloth,
60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in
the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the
sepulchre, and departed.
(48) Raised from the dead.
Isa.26:19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my
dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in
dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall
cast out the dead.
Luke 24:6 He is not here, but
is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in
Galilee,
7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of
sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
Lu 24:46 And said unto them,
Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to
rise from the dead the third day:
(49) Raised before his
body had time to decay.
Psa.16:10 For thou wilt not
leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One
to see corruption.
Acts 2:31 He seeing this
before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was
not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
(50) His ascension.
Psa.68:18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led
captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for
the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.
Luke 24:51 And it came to
pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and
carried up into heaven.
Acts 1:9 And when he had
spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a
cloud received him out of their sight.
In view of His performance
in fulfilling past prophecies, can there be any doubt as to his
ability to bring the rest of the Word of God to pass?
