Harmony of Prophecy
Lesson #4
MISCELLANEOUS PROPHECIES AND THEIR
FULFILLMENT
I. Absolute or unconditional
prophecies:
These WILL happen!
The destruction of Jeroboam's
altar. I Kings ch.13
1. The prophet is not named.
I Kings 13:1 And, behold, there
came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel:
and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.
2.The prophecy was more than
mere destruction.
V 2 And he cried against the altar in the word of the
LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child
shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee
shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon
thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee.
3.The sign: Every fulfillment
is a sure sign of the things which are to follow.
V 3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is
the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be
rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.
Fulfillment:
V 5 The altar also was rent, and
the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the
man of God had given by the word of the LORD.
4. Even though the prophet
personally failed later, it had no bearing on the accuracy of his
prophecy which had come from God.
I Kings 13:9 For so was it charged me by the word of
the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by
the same way that thou camest.
10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came
to Bethel.
11 Now there dwelt an old prophet
in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man
of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken
unto the king, them they told also to their father.
12 And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons
had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.
13 And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled
him the ass: and he rode thereon,
14 And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an
oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from
Judah? And he said, I am.
15 Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.
16 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee:
neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:
17 For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt
eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn
again to go by the way that thou camest.
18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel
spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with
thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he
lied unto him.
19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and
drank water.
20 And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word
of the
LORD came unto the prophet that
brought him back:
21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying,
Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of
the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God
commanded thee,
22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the
place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread,
and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the
sepulchre of thy fathers.
23 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had
drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom
he had brought back.
24 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him:
and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the
lion also stood by the carcase.
25 And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the
way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it
in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
26 And when the prophet that
brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man
of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the
LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and
slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto
him.
27 And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they
saddled him.
28 And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass
and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the
carcase, nor torn the ass.
29 And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid
it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to
the city, to mourn and to bury him.
30 And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned
over him, saying, Alas, my brother!
31 And it came to pass, after he
had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead,
then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay
my bones beside his bones:
32 For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against
the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places
which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.
5. Prophecy concerning the
prophet's body
V 21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from
Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed
the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the
LORD thy God commanded thee,
22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the
place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and
drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy
fathers.
6. Neither the good intentions
of the one prophet nor the false trust of the other altered the
truth.
The fulfillment. 120-130 years
later. II Kings 23.
Bones burnt on the altar.
II Kings 23:16 And as Josiah
turned himself, he spied the sepulchres that were there in the
mount, and sent, and took the bones out of the sepulchres, and
burned them upon the altar, and polluted it, according to the word
of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these
words.
2. Bones of the prophet NOT
moved to the sepulcher of his fathers.
II Kings 23:17 Then he said, What
title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is
the sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and
proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of
Bethel.
V 18 And he said, Let him alone; let no man move his bones. So they
let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of
Samaria.
II. A Conditional Prophecy.
[This will happen IF------]
The statements in Deuteronomy ch.28 as to the fate of Israel if they
did not keep God's Laws, were conditional prophecies. Were they
fulfilled? Read the account of the siege of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 by
Titus as written by Josephus.
The prophecy of rebuilding
Jericho.
Josh.6: 26 And Joshua adjured them
at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth
up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation
thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up
the gates of it.
The fulfillment, 350 years
later.
I Kings 16: 34 In his days did
Hiel the Bethelite build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in
Abiram his firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest
son Segub, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by
Joshua the son of Nun.
III. The Prophecy of
Zedekiah’s end.
Ezek.12: 8 And in the morning came
the word of the LORD unto me, saying,
9 Son of man, hath not the house of Israel, the rebellious house,
said unto thee, What doest thou?
10 Say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; This burden
concerneth the prince in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel that
are among them.
11 Say, I am your sign: like as I have done, so shall it be done
unto them: they shall remove and go into captivity.
12 And the prince that is among them shall bear upon his shoulder in
the twilight, and shall go forth: they shall dig through the wall to
carry out thereby: he shall cover his face, that he see not the
ground with his eyes.
13 My net also will I spread upon
him, and he shall be taken in my snare: and I will bring him to
Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet shall he not see it,
though he shall die there.
14 And I will scatter toward every wind all that are about him to
help him, and all his bands; and I will draw out the sword after
them.
This was fulfilled four years
later.
Jer.52: 8 But the army of the
Chaldeans pursued after the king, and overtook Zedekiah in the
plains of Jericho; and all his army was scattered from him.
9 Then they took the king, and carried him up unto the king of
Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath; where he gave judgment upon
him.
10 And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his
eyes: he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah.
Then he put out the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound
him in chains, and carried him to Babylon, and put him in prison
till the day of his death.
IV. The prophecy of Jezebel’s
death.
Elijah tells it.
I Kings 21: 23 And of Jezebel also spake the LORD,
saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.
Elisha repeats it.
II Kings. 9: 10 And the dogs shall
eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and there shall be none to
bury her. And he opened the door, and fled.
It was fulfilled and only
afterward, did the man responsible realize he had done what God had
promised!
II Kings 9:30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel,
Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head,
and looked out at a window.
31 And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace,
who slew his master?
32 And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who is on my
side? who? And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs.
33 And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some
of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he
trode her under foot.
34 And when he was come in, he did eat and drink, and said, Go, see
now this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king's daughter.
35 And they went to bury her: but they found no more of her than the
skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands.
36 Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the
word of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite,
saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of
Jezebel:
And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the
field in the portion of Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is
Jezebel.
Conclusion: What if some DID
NOT BELIEVE?
Rom.3: 3 For what if some did not believe? shall their
unbelief make the faith of God without effect?
4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is
written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and
mightest overcome when thou art judged.
