THE TRIUMPHS OF THE CROSS
Text: Col 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of
ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took
it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of
them openly, triumphing over them in it.
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in
respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
Intro: The scene of the cross; the mocking crowd, the
hopelessness of the disciples; (Mark 10:28 Then Peter
began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed
thee.---and now he is defeated) If we were to see only
the human side of the event, it would be the final defeat for his
church, even before she began her task.
Yet, when Paul gloried in the cross, he rejoiced, not over defeat,
but a great victory!
I Its triumph over the Law. (see Text)
A. The Law could only tell of and condemn sin
Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh
be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
B. Christ gave us victory over the Law by taking its penalty
upon himself.
Gal 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under
the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth
not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do
them.
11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it
is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall
live in them.
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a
curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on
a tree:
II Its triumph over sin
Heb 9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the
foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath
he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
A. Sin had held man in its dread grip since the fall of
Adam
Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world,
and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all
have sinned:
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is
eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
B. He triumphed and delivered us by the cross
I Cor 15:56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin
is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our
Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore sin shall no more have dominion over you!
Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for
ye are not under the law, but under grace.
III Its triumph over death
Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh
and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that
through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that
is, the devil;
15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their
lifetime subject to bondage.
A. Death was the universal enemy of the entire human race
Rom 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses,
even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's
transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 15 But not
as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence
of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by
grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the
judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many
offences unto justification.
17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they
which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness
shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
B. It has been abolished in Christ.
II Tim 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our
Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought
life and immortality to light through the gospel:
C. Its sting has been pulled
I Cor 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where
is thy victory?
56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our
Lord Jesus Christ.
This is the fulfillment of :
Isa 25:8 He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD
will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his
people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath
spoken it.
IV In the cross, every work of the devil is defeated
I Jno 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil
sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was
manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
A. The nature of satanic works
Jno 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your
father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode
not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh
a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of
it.
B He (Satan) has blinded the eyes of the lost
II Cor 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds
of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of
Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
C. Christ has broken this power and delivered us
Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and
hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
V Its triumph over Satan, himself
Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the
woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head,
and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Rev 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come
salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power
of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which
accused them before our God day and night.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word
of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
VI The Triumph over ALL
Col 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a
show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Jno 12:27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father,
save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven,
saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it
thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.
30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but
for your sakes.
31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this
world be cast out.
32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto
me.
33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.
Phil 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of
things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
II Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body,
according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
A. We can share in his triumph!
Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
